About the Recipe

Khichdi is a dish that connects us all. It is found in every home in every state which truly unites India. It is present in each and every corner of India be it East, West, North or South: Bhoger Khichuri in Bengal, as Vaghareli Khichdi in Gujarat, as Mong Khetchir in Kashmir or as as Bisi Bele Bath in Karnataka.

Bisi Bele Bath is a South Indian version of Khichdi all the way from Karnataka.
It requires the preparation of a special masala followed the the preparation of Khichdi.
I absolutely loved it and you too must give it a try!

Ingredients

For Masala:

  • Chana Dal: 2 tbsp

  • Urad Dal: 2 tbsp

  • Cinnamon: 1 inch

  • Cardamom: 2 pc

  • Cloves: 4 pc

  • Peppercorns: 1 tbsp

  • Jeera: 1 tbsp

  • Dried Red Chilli: 20 pc

  • Coriander Seeds: 8 tbsp

  • Curry Leaves: 24 pc

  • Dried Coconut: 1/2 cup

  • Poppy Seeds: 2 tbsp

  • Hing: 1 tbsp


For Khichdi:

  • Rice: 200 gm

  • Toor Dal: 200 gm

  • Potato: 1 large pc

  • Carrot: 1 pc

  • Beans: 1/2 cup

  • Turmeric Powder: 1/2 tbsp

  • Salt to taste

  • Ghee: 3 tbsp

  • Fenugreek/Methi Dana: 1/2 tbsp

  • Mustard Seeds: 1 tbsp

  • Cumin: 1 tbsp

  • Curry Leaves: 12-14 sprigs

  • Capsicum: 1 pc

  • Tomato: 2 pc

  • Cashews: 67 gm

  • Imli Water

  • Dry Coconut: 2 tbsp

  • Jaggery: 2 tbsp

  • Water

Preparation

Step 1

First, we'll prepare the Bisi Bele Bath masala by roasting all the spices (full ingredient list for masala mentioned above) in an oven or pan and then simply blending them.


Step 2

Wash rice and dal properly. Pressure cook them along with carrot, beans, potato, water, salt and turmeric powder for 2 whistles or till done.


Step 3

To a kadai, add ghee, fenugreek, mustard seeds, cumin and curry leaves. Once they start to splatter, add chopped capsicum, tomato and cashews. Let it cook.


Step 4

Then add half of the prepared Bisi Bele Bath Masala along with imli water and dry coconut. Mix well and let it cook. Add water as and when required. Also add some jaggery.


Step 5

Once it has cooked, add the boiled rice-dal-veggie mix and combine everything together. Add water to adjust the consistency (if required). Let it cook for a few minutes.


Step 6

Your Bisi Bele Bath Khichdi is ready. Serve with some boondi, roasted cashews, peanuts and coriander leaves. Enjoy!
